All About Ann

Ann Feld was born on a cold January morning in 1985 in Maryland to a musical household that played everything from John Denver to funk and R&B. She grew up recording her own improvs and ditties on her electronic keyboard with an old Fisher-Price recorder, hoping one day to make something of those songs.

Music was always a big part of her life: she played clarinet in elementary through high school, joined the high school choir, and even dabbled in guitar for a while. Having loved to write poems and lyrics since she could pick up a pen, she began putting her own words to her own melodies, influenced by the pop music from her parents and by music she would hear on the radio.

She experimented with a four-track recorder and various cheap music-making computer programs in late high-school and college, even putting her own poems to techno arrangements as she spoke her words over the music. After recording many of her own songs that will not see the light of day beyond her bedroom closet, Ann Feld finally created her first “real” album, as she puts it: Welcome to the Aquarium, a 7-track release of music and lyrics that she worked on during 2009 and was released in January 2010.

2010 not only marked the release of Welcome to the Aquarium, but also it was the year that Ann started doing live shows. Her first live show in front of an audience was at Borjo Coffeehouse in Norfolk, Virginia in April 2010. She then began performing her songs on her Ustream channel, took up the piano, and wrote new material for her second album, already sure of a new direction compared to the quirky pop of her debut.

In December 2010, she released her 2nd album, Coming Up For Air, to iTunes and all digital outlets. Influenced by artists such as Kate Bush, Imogen Heap, Moby, Mylène Farmer, and Thievery Corporation, Coming Up For Air marked a different direction for the budding singer/songwriter. The record contained ten electronic pop rock songs with airy and melodic atmospheres with Ann’s mezzo-soprano vocals carrying each song into the next.

In addition to working on new songs, Ann Feld has also re-recorded the vocals from her first album Welcome to the Aquarium and re-released it in spring 2011 as Welcome Back to the Aquarium. Not only does this re-release contain all new vocals from Ann but it also includes instrumental tracks for all the songs on that album. This album is also available on all iTunes stores worldwide.

In the meantime, Ann Feld has continued to write new music and perform both on her Ustream channel and in person. In June 2011, Ann performed with her piano, voice and laptop at the annual Maker Faire in Raleigh, North Carolina. When she’s not working on her own music, she is also the star of her own indie music podcast Ann’s Musical Menagerie. All the while, she is collecting new fans far and wide who have discovered her music and have fallen in love with her truly unique sound.
